Kickstarter Adds Stripe, Replacing Amazon for Payments

The crowdfunding site Kickstarter has adopted payment service Stripe for all of its transactions, replacing Amazon Payments.

Projects organized through Stripe will take "about two minutes," according to a Jan. 6 blog post by Kickstarter announcing the change. The old method, through Amazon, "could take a few days," Kickstarter said. Using Stripe, project creators will need to only enter bank account details instead of creating an Amazon Payments account.

Kickstarter used Amazon Payments since a year before the crowdfunding platform's launch, and Amazon processed about $1 billion in Kickstarter pledges. Last year, Amazon discontinued the payments product Kickstarter used, according to the blog post.

Kickstarter says its fees will not change: a 5% fee to the platform for successful projects while Stripe will apply credit card processing fees between 3-5%. 

Overall, Amazon has reported growth in use of its payment services for online and mobile commerce. Orders processed by businesses using Login and Pay with Amazon grew by more than 200% during the 2014 holiday season compared to a year earlier, Amazon said this week.
