MasterCard Purchase Volume Up 16% Worldwide, 6% In The U.S.

Worldwide purchase volume on all MasterCard credit, charge and debit cards totaled $497 billion during the third quarter, up 16% from $430 billion during the same period last year. Purchase volume on cards based in the United States was $218 billion in the third quarter, which ended Sept. 30, up 6% from $205 billion last year. MasterCard's financial institutions issued cards tied to 861 million accounts worldwide, including credit, charge and debit cards, during the quarter, up nearly 12% from 772 million accounts last year. Of those accounts, 344 million were in the U.S., up 4% from 330 million last year. Credit and charge volume was $388 billion worldwide, up 14% from $340 billion worldwide last year. Volume on U.S.-based credit and charge cards was $141 billion, up 1% from $139 billion last year. MasterCard financial institutions issued cards tied to 660 million credit and charge accounts worldwide, up 9% from 606 million last year. Of those, 229 million accounts were in the U.S., down less than 1% from 230 million U.S. credit and charge accounts last year. Debit card volume was $108 billion worldwide during the third quarter, up 20% from $90 billion last year. In the U.S., debit volume was $78 billion, up 18% from $66 billion last year. MasterCard customers issued debit cards tied to 201 million accounts worldwide during the third quarter, up 21% from 166 million accounts last year. Of those accounts, 115 million were based in the U.S., up 15% from 100 million accounts last year. MasterCard says 28.4 million merchant locations now accept its cards, up nearly 10% from 25.9 million locations reported during the third quarter last year. Of the 28.4 million merchant locations reported this year, 8.2 million are in Europe, 7.8 million are in the U.S., 7.6 million are in the Asia-Pacific region, 3 million are in Latin America, 1 million are in South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and 800,000 are in Canada.
