MasterCard Inc. plans to introduce its contactless payment technology into Azerbaijan during the first half of 2013.
The PayPass contactless bank cards, a technology used in 48 countries, will be new to the Azerbaijani market, the card network announced last week.
PayPass technology enables MasterCard cardholders to complete a “tap-and-go” transaction at retail and service businesses accepting contactless payments at the point-of-sale.
The use of PayPass cards will be ideal for Azerbaijani customers at movie theaters, fast-food outlets, supermarkets or inside taxi cabs, MasterCard stated in a press release.
PayPass allows contactless payments for low-value transactions, likely in a range of about 16 manat ($20.45 U.S.) in the Azerbaijan region between Western Asia and Eastern Europe.
