MBNA Testing MasterPass Digital Wallet in U.K.

MBNA Ltd. is working with MasterCard Inc. to test the MasterPass digital wallet in the U.K., with plans for a possible launch in early 2015.

This digital wallet will allow customers to store their credit and debit cards and choose a payment option via MasterPass at checkout. Besides MasterCard, the MBNA Wallet will enable customers to load Visa, American Express, and other credit or debit cards.

Over 30,000 online U.K. businesses currently accept MasterPass, such as Boots, Argos, thetrainline.com, I Want One of Those and PC World.

"The system is simple, secure and fast and marks a leap forward in the level of innovation MBNA is applying to our services in order to make life easier for our customers," said Michael Donald, commercial and customer experience executive at the London-based MBNA, in a Dec. 16 press release.

MBNA is a subsidiary of Bank of America Corp., which purchased the company eight years ago for $35 billion.
