Payscout adds virtual reality-driven shopping to its merchant menu

Merchant processor Payscout is giving virtual reality-based shopping a boost with its new VR Commerce app for Google Cardboard that features Visa Checkout built into its menu.

The Payscout VR Commerce app goes live today with its first merchant, Los Angeles-based e-commerce retailer Body Language Sportswear, enabling shoppers who use a Google Cardboard headset to capture a 360-degree video view of merchandise. Customers may gesture with their eyes to inspect items in greater detail, opting to rotate, enlarge or enhance focus on specific items, the Los Angeles-based Payscout said in a press release.

Users peruse the catalog of merchandise and make selections through eye motions via the headset, and use the same approach to check out through a menu that includes the option to pay with Visa Checkout for a frictionless experience, the company said.

“We’ve seen many prototypes and simulations of VR shopping, but this is the first time anyone can experience (immediate) purchases using VR technology,” said Cleveland Brown, Payscout’s CEO, who demonstrated the app during a panel discussion about virtual reality today at Money20/20 in Copenhagen.

Payscout’s VR Commerce app is only available on Google Play but the company plans to adapt the technology for IOS and other VR platforms in the near future.
