Six Handset Manufacturers Agree To Isis NFC Standards

Isis announced on Sept. 27 that several companies will launch mobile devices that implement its NFC and technology standards.

HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson will introduce the NFC-enabled mobile devices. NFC-enabled phones would allow Isis consumers to make payments, store and present loyalty cards and redeem offers at participating merchants with the tap of their phones.

Isis, a joint venture between AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, is working to develop an open mobile commerce platform that aligns the interests of stakeholders and provides consumers with security. It is also working with DeviceFidelity to add NFC functionality to mobile devices that are not NFC enabled.

Isis, the telecommunication consortium intent on offering a mobile-payment scheme, is building out a wider range of mobile-wallet capabilities to keep up with its aggressive rival, Google Inc. ( see story). Isis made headway in July when it signed Visa Inc., American Express Co. and MasterCard Worldwide to its system ( see story).
