  • PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Service CU, chartered to serve military personnel at Pease Air Force Base, said Friday it has contributed $20,000 for the benefit the Air Force and its retirees. The contributions include $15,000 for the New Hampshire Air Force Memorial Fund, which is building a monument at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in nearby Boscawen to honor Air Force veterans. Groundbreaking for the monument was held yesterday and the project is slated for completion on Memorial Day 2008.

  • ATLANTA – S1 Corp., the credit union and bank outsourcer, said Friday that third quarter earnings plummeted by 85%, to $5.1 million, or eight cents a share. Third quarter revenue growth was flat, at $51.3 million. Third quarter expenses include the purchase of the company’s previously leased headquarters in Norcross, Ga., for $8 million; the repurchase of $20 million worth of stock; and stock-based compensation costs of $2.9 million. The parent of S1 Enterprise and Postilion reported a 76% drop in net income for the first three quarters, to $13.1 million, and a 7% increase in revenues, to $143.1 million.

  • LAKE MARY, Fla. – Central Florida Educators FCU recently made good on its five-year commitment to donate $500,000 to Orange County Public Schools for books. Last month, the $1.1-billion credit union made its final payment of $100,000 divided among 10 Orange County public schools. This year Cypress Park, Lake Como, Lockhart, Maxey, McCoy, Ridgewood Park, Rosemont elementary schools; Union Park and Wolf Lake middle schools; and Apopka High School received $10,000 each to buy books for their media centers.

  • OGDEN, Utah – America First FCU has signed with Alogent Corp. to implement the company’s Sierra Xpedite and Sierra Xchange teller deposit automation systems as an image-enabled automation strategy, the $4-billion credit union said yesterday. The aim is to transform the current teller operations model to one that converts paper checks to images at the teller line in real time. The 500,000-member credit union plans to deploy Alogent’s Sierra suite across its 75 branches, providing image-enabled automation for more than 500 tellers across the state.

  • SANTA CLARA, Calif. – KeyPoint CU said Friday it has signed with Fortex Technologies to install the company’s VendorPoint vendor management system. The $800-million credit union will use VendorPoint to streamline and improve the effectiveness of its vendor compliance and risk management program. The system will automate everything from due diligence to risk mitigation and management approvals. Fortex is based in Frederick, Md.

  • PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford FCU announced yesterday it has joined the Allpoint surcharge-free ATM network. This will provide access to more than 3,200 ATMs in California and 32,000 nationwide for members of the $825 million credit union. Allpoint is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cardtronics Inc., the nation’s largest independent operator of ATMs.

    SAN ANTONIO, Fla. – San Antonio Citizens FCU said yesterday it has begun using Aimbridge Lending Solutions Loan Generation Services to expand pre-approval application options for its 11,500 members. Loan Generation Services helps credit unions capture pre-approvals via the branch, phone or Internet and makes them accessible to members and auto dealers via the Internet. The offering is Aimbridge’s first step towards a full suite of products for web-based lending.

  • WASHINGTON – The National CU Foundation was notified yesterday it won a $710,296 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which the Foundation will award to 22 credit unions to help support their homeownership counseling programs. The credit unions will use the funding to leverage almost $6 million in low-income homeownership counseling programs. Through September 2008, these 22 credit unions plan to reach nearly 10,000 potential first-time homebuyers, including 6,525 who earn less than 80% of their area median income.

  • SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Increasing numbers of banks are abandoning their antipathy to credit unions and joining them, instead on business lending. Stephen Mackowitz, vice president commercial lending for Digital FCU, told attendees to CUNA’s annual Lending Council conference yesterday that Citizens Bank and even giant Bank of America have sent MBL customers to his credit union. Pete Van Graafeiland, vice president of mortgage and business services for Coastal FCU, said his credit union has even financed new branches for three different banks. In addition, they have entertained bankers at the skybox they rent at the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes games. “It doesn’t hurt to get banker buddies,” said Craig Carpenter, senor vice president member business services at SELCO Community CU.

  • SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Prospera CU is preparing to roll out a turnkey version of its award-winning GoodMoney payday loan program, which it will market to other credit unions. The credit union will provide staff training, advertising and marketing assistance and software in exchange for a start-up fee and an ongoing fee, Ken Eiden, president of the Appleton, Wis., credit union, announced yesterday during CUNA’s annual Lending Council conference. “We’ve actually got a program to assist credit unions of all sizes to get going,” said Eiden. “We’re going to roll it out real soon.” The program, winner of the 2006 Herb Wegner Award for credit union excellence, is a collaboration with Goodwill Industries and provides low-cost payday loans to Goodwill customers. Prospera has provided 8,000 payday loans for a total of $2.8 million and added 1,200 new members through the program.

  • SAN ANTONIO, Texas – U.S. Central CU has begun marketing a student loan origination program through its Charlie Mac CUSO. The loans, which are being marketed through U.S. Central’s corporate members, will be originated by Campusdoor, a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers. As many as 11 corporates have begun marketing the product and more than a half-dozen credit unions have begun offering it to their members. Among them are: Fort Lee FCU, Connex FCU, Altier CU, and Deer Valley CU. The program was unveiled yesterday at CUNA’s annual Lending Council conference. The private loans, called CU Student HELP (for Higher Education Loan Program), will provide lower-cost funding for students looking to supplement federally guaranteed loans or those not eligible for federal loans, according to Tracy Sniscak, client relationship manager for Campusdoor. “This is also a good way for credit unions to build relationships with younger people, the so-called Gen Yers,” she told The Credit Union Journal yesterday. Charlie Mac was created by U.S. Central in 1999 to provide a secondary market conduit for jumbo mortgages, and expanded to include auto loans.
