Card Briefs: NCR Unit Enables Self-Service Grocery Checkout

NCR Corp. said it has developed a self-service machine for supermarket checkout.

Consumers will be able to scan, bag, and pay for groceries without intervention by cashiers. The unit incorporates a touch-sensitive, automated-teller-like screen that prompts the consumer through the purchase, whether payment is by cash or debit or credit card.

NCR demonstrated a prototype at the Food Marketing Institute's 1997 exposition in Houston. The device has yet to be market-tested.
