Giving employees a voice for making positive change

Employees at Altura Credit Union have a voice to affect positive change, explained Chris Andrus, chief culture officer at the $1.3 billion-asset credit union.

“We utilize a reporting tool that allows them to make suggestions and identify opportunities to improve internal processes that allow for higher levels of member service and employee engagement and satisfaction,” he said.

Altura was ranked No. 11 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and No. 4 among CUs with assets of $1 billion or more.

To keep employees happy and productive, the credit union offers various outlets, such as “Fun Fridays.” On a monthly basis, the training department facilitates activities and games for the employees to play company wide where gifts and prizes are given out, noted Andrus.

Altura also sponsors “Holiday Hook Ups,” which allows employees to write-in about what they would like to receive that would help a family member or themselves have a better holiday season.

“A committee chooses a designated number of worthy recipients and then purchases the items requested by the employee, and goes to their [office] dressed as elves to give the gifts to the employee,” said Andrus.

There is also great importance placed on achieving a work-life balance. This includes the CU sponsoring occasional initiatives such as weight loss challenges, strategies for healthier eating and better living, or ways to improve work-life balance through activities such as gym membership discounts and free exercise classes at Altura’s Riverside, Calif. headquarters.

“Part of Altura’s vision is having an extremely productive and engaged workforce that loves Altura,” said Andrus.

Founded in 1957, Altura Credit Union supports 13 branches and more than 125,000 members with $1.3 billion in assets.
