How burgers with the boss keeps employees engaged

According to CEO Richard McLeod, Riverfront Federal Credit Union relies on a “true” open door policy to keep its 58 employees engaged and forward-leaning.

“Throughout the year, we challenge our staff members to look at creating efficiencies in both how we do things [and in] the services that we offer,” said McLeod. “With their suggestions, we create bigger, better and faster ways to provide service and enhancements to our product offerings.”

In addition to performance evaluations, which are held once a year with supervisors, McLeod also has “one-on-one listening sessions” with all new hires and existing employees “to keep a finger on the pulse” of the Wyomissing, Pa.-based organization.

“Our senior management team also maintains branch presence by visiting all of our locations multiple times each month,” he said. “When project teams are created, we utilize participants from all departments within the credit union.”

Riverfront FCU was ranked No. 16 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and ranked No. 4 among CUs with assets under $200 million.

McLeod said he tries to hire from within his own ranks whenever possible. The best indicator of future success, he added, is in the “growth of those that are committed to” the credit union, as well as to their own personal growth.

“We identify in yearly performance evaluations the career path progression desired by each staff member,” he explained. “Then, we work through training plans intended to enhance the skills of that individual so that they are poised to assume a new role when it is presented to them.”

No matter the level of the employee, excellence is rewarded at Riverfront Federal CU. Team recognition takes place at fun events with senior management, such as “Burgers with Bosses,” where the executive team grills for the staff.

“We think that the greatest reward is knowing that you are appreciated,” said McLeod.

Founded in 1948, Riverfront Federal Credit Union supports three branches and more than 21,000 members.
