LANSING, Mich. — Credit unions throughout Michigan today are dealing with power outages due to downed electrical lines as the result of a massive ice storm that rolled through the region on Saturday night.
The storm left more than a quarter-inch of ice in some places, and as of Monday more than 50,000 consumers throughout the region were still without power, with some utility companies saying it could be as late as Friday, Dec. 27 before all power is restored.
The Michigan Credit Union League told Credit Union Journal that it had not yet heard reports of damage from any of its member credit unions, however several credit union branches throughout the state were closed on Monday as a result of power outages.
Throughout the Greater Lansing region, several branches were closed at Lake Trust CU, LAFCU, and Michigan State University FCU. MSUFCU's system was down on Sunday evening, but the credit union was able to get it up and running by mid-day Monday.
Some branches at Lansing's Astera CU were closed, however the credit union was advising members on its Facebook page that branches were unable to accommodate cash withdrawals of more than $300.
FM Financial CU in Flint was closed on Monday due both to the weather and complications from the controlled implosion of a nearby building over the weekend. Also in Flint, three branches of Dort FCU were closed due to power outages.
