Spokane Federal Credit Union to rebrand as Canopy CU

Spokane Federal Credit Union soon will be changing its name to Canopy Credit Union.

The $157 million-asset institution, based in Spokane, Wash., said its new name refers to a forest canopy, a sheltered ecosystem that “depends on its community to thrive and grow,” similar to how the credit union has “created deep roots” in the Spokane community for more than 60 years.

“Canopy mirrors the cooperative relationship between the credit union, its members and the people of the Inland Northwest who come together to flourish and succeed,” the credit union said in a statement.

The new name will become official on July 22. It was unveiled to the membership late last week, along with a new logo and tagline.

Along with the rebrand, the credit union is also developing a new branch to be shared with local coffee house Revel 77 as part of a co-location strategy some financial institutions are testing. That branch, which will expand the CU’s operations into the Spokane Valley, is slated to open – with the new name – in August.

Charlotte Nemec, president and CEO of Spokane Federal Credit Union

Charlotte Nemec, president and CEO of Spokane Federal Credit Union, and Susan Cerutti-Jensen, its marketing director, said they worked with Propaganda Creative, a local marketing agency, on creating the new moniker.

“For months, we worked closely with the agency to develop our new brand,” said Cerutti-Jensen. “We knew we wanted a name that reflected not only where we’ve been and who we’ve become, but also a name that will help us better define our future.”

She added that interviews of members, non-members, the board of directors and staff helped to paint a picture of “what is at the heart of our credit union.”

“We landed on a brand that is in step with our past and our future,” she asserted. “Canopy relates to the Pacific Northwest, illustrates our ideals and appeals to a wide demographic.”

Nemec said the credit union’s goal remains the same: offer the community a place where everyone can grow strong financial roots.
