Financial literacy partnership

Worcester CU, Worcester, Mass., is collaborating with the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center to provide financial literacy training to its staff and, eventually, to patients at the center. The CU’s management team visited the health center to learn more about its role in the community. Separately, WCU donated back grant money it had received from the state in the form of $100 grocery gift cards to 28 participants in a training program.

1st United adopts schools

1st United CU, Pleasanton, Calif., launched an Adopt-a-School program, supporting several Alameda County elementary schools. For several years, the CU has supported schools with fundraising programs and by providing financial education to more than 12,000 high school students in Alameda County. Upon seeing a further need, the CU’s Adopt-a-School program will include volunteerism, sponsorship and financial education.

The Foodie 5k

Employees of NuMark CU, Joliet, Ill., grabbed their running shoes to raise money for Northern Illinois Food Bank’s 4th Annual Foodie 5K. The NuMark team raised a total of $1,659 for Northern Illinois Food Bank, including staff jeans days and other personal donations.

More Harvey relief

Employees of WESTconsin CU, Menomonie, Wis., collected critical items for victims of Hurricane Harvey, including underwear, socks, diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, towels and wash cloths, bedding, hygiene products, flip flops, and warm ups for all ages. A total of 384 lbs. of items were sent to Texas. Separately, the CU raised $5,669.58 for local CMN hospitals.

Golf tourney gives back

The Charitable Foundation for Hanscom FCU, Hanscom AFB, Mass., held its third annual Golf Classic at Red Tail Golf Course in Devens, Mass. The event drew 138 golfers and raised $120,000 to benefit the Red Sox Foundation and Mass General Hospital’s Home Base program. Separately, Josephine Schiavone and her 19 guests enjoyed a Red Sox game from a luxury box at Fenway Park thanks to the Foundation’s “See the Sox from the Box” raffle.

Community garden and scholarships

Michigan Legacy CU joined a community garden project near its main branch in Pontiac, Mich. The project allows those in need to volunteer their time to plant and, at harvest time, benefit from what is grown in the garden. Separately, the CU awarded $4,500 in scholarships, with three worthy students receiving $1,000 each and three getting $500 each.

Indiana Members CU, Indianapolis, presented a check for $4,047 to Center Grove Schools in Greenwood, Ind., as part of an ongoing school spirit debit card program.

Advance Financial FCU, East Chicago, Ind., became a Patriot-level donor for the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame memorial, which is being constructed in Indianapolis. An artist's rendering of the facility is seen here.

Do Gooders Unite!

As part of its Do Gooders Unite campaign, the Foundation for Blue FCU, Cheyenne, Wyo., fulfilled its pledge to donate $10,000 to downtown Wellington, Colo., to install new bike racks throughout Main Street with the vision of welcoming bike riders to downtown.
