Diebold Inc.'s automated teller machines have been certified to offer prepaid gift cards using technology developed by Better ATM Services Inc. of Mesa, Ariz.
Better ATM Services said Monday that Diebold has been testing the technology for several months, and that its machines now can dispense gift cards using their existing cash trays, without requiring any additional hardware or components.
Last month Better ATM Services announced that it had developed a way to sell gift cards through ATMs, and that several local restaurants were testing the system, which uses cards that are thinner than the typical plastic ones.
Charles E. Ducey, Diebold's senior vice president for global development and services, said in a Better ATM Services press release that the technology "breathes new life into legacy ATMs and ushers in a new era of ATM dispensing technology."
