Joseph P. Mazzetti, Fundtech's executive vice president of corporate development, said the agreement would help protect the transaction systems of banks against the failure of hardware components.

Some banks have their own backup systems, but "the majority of banks in the mid-tier range were left largely unserved," he said. "This is a very important step for us."

Robert Coakley, Fundtech's senior vice president of product development and delivery, said the company has certified that Marathon's everRun software will work with the release of its own PayPlus USA transaction system that runs on Microsoft Windows servers and will come out in October. Fundtech is to supply help-desk and operational support to banks that buy the Marathon software.

The company also is trying to extend the certification to its other payments software, he said.

"We do have plans in place for our cash management applications that are Windows-based," he said. "This is a solution that has to be rolled out, not just as an application. There are infrastructure considerations as well."

Fundtech has been testing everRun with three banks for several months and is in the planning stages with others, Mr. Coakley said.

Marathon said that everRun synchronizes two standard Windows servers to create a single environment that operates as a stand-alone server to prevent interruptions and downtime without requiring two fully configured systems.
