Infosys said last week that it is the first company outside North America to join the group, which BITS formed last year to establish standards for evaluating security controls.

"It will help keep us on our toes and meet our clients' requirements," Ashok Vemuri, a senior vice president at Infosys and the head of its banking and capital markets group, said in an interview. "We're also hoping to bring to bear our expertise in this area and to help shape the debate."

Security standards will become more important as more technology development work is moved to countries such as India, which has been criticized for lagging in security compliance, Mr. Vemuri said.

"We are hoping to play the evangelist's role to the rest of our industry and country," he said.
