The San Francisco company says its Wells Fargo Mobile service, available to all its retail banking customers, lets them check balances, view transaction histories, and transfer money between designated Wells accounts.

Wells uses software to determine the specifications of the handheld device accessing the service, to make the information readable on the customer's device.

Wells and Visa U.S.A. Inc. plan to distribute cell phones with contactless payment capabilities to 300 to 500 Wells Fargo Visa cardholders by next quarter.
