One of the chronic flaws of retailer-driven loyalty programs is that often it’s hard to actually get the rewards. Consumers complain that it takes too long or steps required are too cumbersome to conveniently redeem their points.

Banks are often taken for granted in digital wallets, treated as a "dumb pipe" for funding another account. PayPal is working to provide a more welcoming atmosphere with deals recently announced with Citigroup, FIS and two other banks.

FIS has added Zelle, Early Warning’s P-to-P system (formerly clearXchange), to its offerings as it seeks to expand its real-time payments suite.
