Amex, Coupa Pay chart a global course for digital supply chain payments

American Express is integrating its virtual cards with Coupa Pay's corporate business spending platform for clients in the U.K and Australia by the end of 2019, with plans to extend the service in the U.S. in mid-2020.

Amex looks to expand its virtual card reach through San Mateo, Calif.-based Coupa, which offers Coupa Pay to help businesses better manage supplier payments.

Businesses will be able to use American Express virtual cards to pay suppliers for payments that go through the Coupa platform. After the business links its eligible American Express account to Coupa Pay, virtual cards can automatically be sent to authorized suppliers.

“Our priority is to seamlessly unify the buyer and supplier customer experience and as part of this mission, we seek to partner with innovative companies who help to make electronic business payments easier,” Dean Henry, executive vice president of business financing and supplier payments at American Express, said in a Wednesday press release.

Amex said users also receive increased security through the virtual card model, as well as automated invoice matching and reconciliation, and payment tracking tools.

“We launched Coupa Pay to fix the fragmented business payments process because we knew there was a better way for buyers and suppliers to interact at this critical step,” JR Robertson, vice president of Coupa Pay, said in the release.

American Express customers will also receive servicing and supplier onboarding support from both companies.
