Debit card transactions and dollar volume each grew roughly 15% between 2006 and 2007, according to a Packaged Facts report released last week. U.S. debit card transaction volume rose 14.4%, to $1.35 trillion in 2007 from $1.18 trillion the previous year. PIN- and signature-debit transactions rose 15.3%, to 28.7 billion from 24.9 billion, according to Rockville, Md.-based Packaged Facts. The market-research firm attributes the debit market's growth to increased use of debit cards for bill payment and for such everyday purchases as groceries, gasoline and drugstore merchandise. A Packaged Facts analyst was not available to comment by CardLine deadline.
