First Data Corp. says it expects to release a wireless point-of-sale terminal, the FD400, during the third quarter or fourth quarter of this year. The terminal can support either the CDMA or GPRS wireless networks used by such major telecommunication companies as AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile, says Russell Bird, First Data senior vice president of terminal and hardware solutions. "[The FD400] will be fairly revolutionary in that you can order the device and then at the same time pick which service provider you want, and we'll put that module in and ship it out," Bird says. Other terminal vendors offer separate terminals for CDMA and GPRS, he adds.
