Oberthur is a global supplier of security and identification software and services based on smart-card technologies. In the partnership announced Nov. 18, both companies say they will provide card issuers with expertise in smart cards and card personalization technology.

Oberthur currently provides First Data with smart-card technology services in the U.K.

Atlanta, Ga.-based First Data says it has been an approved EMV transaction processor since 1999, and has been working on U.S. issuers' chip-card portfolios since the move to EMV began in the U.S.

"The partnership reflects First Data's determination to lead the industry in preparing for the U.S. EMV migration and provide its customers a world-class solution," First Data CEO Frank Bisignano states in a press release.

First Data recently announced it had completed MasterCard testing requirements to process Maestro EMV ATM transactions. MasterCard in April began requiring ATM owners and operators that accept Maestro cards be capable of accepting EMV transactions.

Last month, Colombes, France-based Oberthur joined the Fast Identity Online Alliance as a member of its board of directors, bringing its expertise in Near Field Communication, mobile wallets and cloud-based payments.

Oberthur has two card personalization centers and a manufacturing site in the U.S.
