The Orange County Register in Southern California reported late last month that sheriff’s deputies had arrested a man and a woman accused of stealing American Express cards shortly after UPS trucks delivered them to homes of the rightful owners. The thefts took place over the course of three months, the article says.

In an incident that may or may not be related, residents from nearby Riverside County captured video through a surveillance camera of a woman apparently stealing an American Express package off their home’s doorstep, a crime blog in the Press-Enterprise website reported March 6.

Suspects in these incidents are thought to have tracked courier shipments of the cards by computer so they could grab the packages shortly after delivery, according to the reports.

The police became aware of the scheme after being alerted by neighbors who were suspicious of a man hanging around the neighborhood, and later seen on home security video taking packages.
