Telecom Bringing NFC-Based Mobile Payments to Thailand

Thailand’s state-owned telecommunications provider TOT says it will launch a Near Field Communication-based mobile pay service in the country next year.

The new Just Pay mobile service includes a mobile wallet, mobile point-of-sale software and a Web-based mobile customer relationship platform for analyzing customer data and establishing promotions and marketing, TOT announced Dec. 5.

The mobile wallet service allows users to store their payment cards to pay for utility bills and access other products and services such as promotional and discount offers from participating retailers, TOT says.

The tablet-based mobile POS software allows consumers to pay retailers by tapping their phone against an NFC reader attached to the tablet.

The customer management dashboard enables merchants to access information on products, inventory, customers, card programs, loyalty programs and branch management in real time.

TOT says it has assigned Act Mobile Ltd., a unit of TOT, to operate the Just Pay business in Thailand. In addition, TOT and Act Mobile will develop technology that will ultimately be part of government policy and a national technology strategy called Smart Thailand 2020.

That project calls for development of cloud computing, location-based service, over-the-air payment, NFC, and high-level security and business analysis, TOT says.
