Where the golden rule is still the No. 1 rule

At Orlando-based Fairwinds Credit Union, CEO Larry Tobin said the golden rule is always followed: Treat others how you would want to be treated. This ethos is embodied by the CU’s 550 employees, also known as crew members.

“We recognize our crew members when they’ve improved or have done an outstanding job,” said Tobin. “We give them the types of opportunities, benefits and culture you want for yourself or for a close family member. At the end of the day, their happiness and well-being directly impacts their loyalty toward the company, each other and our members.”

Fairwinds Credit Union was ranked No. 8 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and No. 2 among institutions with more than $1 billion in assets.

The credit union has a long history of supporting educating crew members so they can achieve respective goals. Tobin, CFO Kathy Chonody and at least four different vice presidents are just a few of senior management who were promoted from within.

“It is ingrained in our culture to foster the growth and development of our crew members,” said Tobin. “We believe that with the right support and tools, all crew are capable of flourishing within Fairwinds and ultimately achieving their career goals with us.”

Another Fairwinds CU motto is “treating others like family,” noted Tobin, who added the CU has never laid off an employee in its 69-year history.

“We treat each other with respect and offer a welcoming, service-minded environment that’s combined with in-demand benefits and perks worth bragging about,” said Tobin. “We also invest in our crew members’ future by offering tuition reimbursement, 401(k) matching and professional development programs.”

Founded in 1949, Fairwinds Credit Union supports 30 branches and more than 186,000 members with $2.2 billion in assets.
