The New York financial services company said in a press release that it has started a search for a chief financial officer and Mr. Bartley will remain with the company "to help ensure an orderly transition to his successor."

Mr. Bartley, 51, was hired by Marsh & McLennan in 2001 as a vice president and treasurer and was named chief financial officer in 2006.

A spokeswoman said that it was a "mutual decision" between Mr. Bartley and the company to part ways. After several tumultuous years, she said, the company has begun to stabilize and is making changes in its executive ranks.

In January, Marsh & McLennan's board named Brian Duperreault president and chief executive officer.

Previously, Mr. Bartley worked for 10 years in senior international treasury and tax posts at PepsiCo Inc., where he was responsible for global strategic transaction planning and execution. He also was vice president of taxes at Engelhard Corp., a multinational specialty chemicals and precious metals company.

Marsh & McLennan has more than 55,000 employees and annual revenue exceeding $11 billion last year. It provides analysis, advice, and transactional capabilities to clients in more than 100 countries.
