SunTrust Banks' online and mobile banking platforms were once again accessible to customers Tuesday morning after having been down for about two days.

"We appreciate your continued patience as we restore our online and mobile banking services," the company tweeted late this morning. "Some clients may have intermittent access, and we continue to monitor performance."

A routine system upgrade had caused the outage, the Atlanta company said Monday. SunTrust provided no additional details Tuesday about the outage or its cause except to say that it was not a cyberattack or a weather-related problem.

Twitter messages from the official SunTrust account had informed customers, some of whom had posted irate messages on social media, that the bank “will make sure you do not incur any fees or penalties due to this outage.”

The regional bank first posted notices to social media on Sunday at 8:24 a.m. that its mobile and online banking access were down.

SunTrust had $208 billion in assets as of June 30. It has branches in 11 states and the District of Columbia. The bank had been directing people seeking assistance to their local branch, ATM, or to call 800-SUNTRUST.

This outage joins a spate of high-profile banking snafus this year due to system upgrades and technical glitches.
