Thailand’s Bangkok Smartcard System Co. Ltd. has inked a partnership deal appointing Vix Erg Pty. Ltd. as a partner in the design and delivery of a smart card clearinghouse service for micropayments, the Australia-based technology vendor announced last week.
Under the partnership, Perth-based Vix Erg will set up a clearinghouse based on its Mass system, which it has previously implemented in 11 cities in five countries.
The system has been most successfully implemented in Beijing, China, where the Beijing Metro Transit Automated Clearing Centre processes more than 9 million transit transactions per day.
“The system will initially provide support for an integrated payments [service] for the Bangkok Mass Transit System Co. Ltd. and Bangkok Metro Co. Ltd. transit systems,” says Nelson Leung, Bangkok Smartcard executive director. “Over time, the system will be extended to provide support for other transit modes and to support micropayments generally in Bangkok.”
Bangkok Metro operates Bangkok’s underground metro system called the Mass Rapid Transit, while Bangkok Mass Transit System operates the BTS Skytrain, an elevated rapid transit system
