Oberthur Technologies SA has developed a translucent contactless payment card that lights up when it is used, giving consumers instant feedback when the cards are communicating with readers at the point of sale.

The Paris company said its Smart Lumiere product, announced Thursday, builds trust among consumers regarding contactless technology.

This system creates "a strong message to encourage adoption of contactless payment," Frederic Chevreton, Oberthur's general manger of payment products for its card systems division, said in a press release. "It also offers issuers a way to differentiate their offering and win top-of-the-wallet status."
