Rewarding employees whose service goes above and beyond

Whether supporting local sports teams, celebrating Halloween, re-living 1980s- or 1990s-themed parties, Bay Federal Credit Union’s CEO Carrie Birkhofer said the CU’s 220 employees work hard, but also have a lot of fun.

“We have special dress-down days on a regular basis and share these photos with our membership on social media,” said Birkhofer. “We also have monthly Member Appreciation Days, with themed treats and decorations in our branches.”

Bay Federal Credit Union was ranked No. 13 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and No. 4 among credit unions with assets ranging from $500 million to $1 billion.

The Capitola, Calif.-based CU’s “BayBuck” program allows employees to honor one another for going above and beyond, explained Birkhofer. Each BayBuck, she added, is valued at one dollar each and can be exchanged for gift certificates at local businesses twice a year.

“A small committee reviews each BayBuck monthly, and three outstanding BayBucks are celebrated each month,” she said. “These recipients get a $40 check, a trophy that they can keep at their desk for a month, and a shout-out on our website and social media.”

The CU also honors individual contributions in sales and service, innovation and efficiencies. Those employees achieving the highest honors receive a service excellence award – Bay Federal’s highest and most prestigious honor for employees.

“This award is for those who truly represent our values and go above and beyond in their service to our membership, our staff, and the community,” said Birkhofer. “These recipients receive a $2,500 travel voucher, an extra week of vacation time and special items for their desk.”

Founded in 1957, Bay Federal Credit Union supports six branches and more than 71,000 members with assets of $970 million.
