CNA Surety Corp. of Chicago said it has picked John F. Welch to join it as the president and chief executive officer, succeeding Mark C. Vonnahme, who announced his retirement this year.
Mr. Welch brings more than 24 years of surety and insurance experience to CNA, the company said on Tuesday. Before joining CNA Surety, he was the chief underwriting officer at St. Paul Surety and chairman of the board of Afianzadora Insurgentes, a stand-alone subsidiary of the St. Paul Cos. He also has held various surety sales and underwriting posts at United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. He began his career at Continental Insurance Co., which CNA bought in 1995.
